How we select

Rules, run the same way every day. No model is required.

  1. 01Pull DOB NOW approved permits and job application filings from NYC Open Data.
  2. 02Keep mechanical systems and boiler equipment. Keep general construction only when the text names HVAC equipment.
  3. 03Score equipment language, commercial cues, and declared cost. Penalize apartment and one- and two-family house work.
  4. 04Drop renewals, and drop a permit issued more than 18 months after its approval. Keep one row per DOB job number.

Limits

These are candidate records, not introductions. The page shows what DOB recorded.

  • Unusual wording gets missed. If the filing never says the equipment, we do not infer it.
  • Renewals are excluded even when the description mentions new gear.
  • Declared cost is whatever the filer typed. Many filings leave it blank.
  • DOB usually does not publish a phone number or an email.
  • PermitSignal is not affiliated with the New York City Department of Buildings.
